The Cushion Project: Barachois Historic Church, NB

The Cushion Project”

The Barachois Historic Church is launching its 200th series of celebration events with the project 200 hooked cushions for my 200th”.

This historical wooden building, situated in Barachois New Brunswick, is still standing after nearly 200 years. The building was disaffected in the late 1970s and reprieved from demolition in 1980. It has since been transformed into a local Museum, art gallery and summer concert and community venue. In order to be more comfortable on the old wooden pews, many event-goers took to bringing a cushion to cultural presentations, and leaving it on the bench. Over time, this developed into a sort of tradition. The Barachois Historic Church Cultural Committee is calling on the rug hooking community, artists and artisans, Acadians and friends of Acadians, to create «hooked cushions» to be exhibited permanently on the church pews.  The first exhibit of this growing collection will be held next August, during the 2019 World Acadian National Congress to be held throughout southeastern New Brunswick as well as on Prince Edward Island.

Call for Submission:

Over 140 cushions have been registered to date. Let’s help them achieve their goal. Interested in taking part in this exciting project? For more information contact Remi Levesque at remileves@gmail.com.

Things to consider:

  • Confirm your interest in the project by email at coussinhooke@gmail.com or remileves@gmail.com; by telephone at (506) 533-9528, or through our Facebook page at “200 coussins hookés pour mon 200ième / 200 hooked cushions for my 200th”.
  • Your work may be produced on jute/burlap, monkscloth or linen; it may cover one side of the cushion or part of one side.
  • The cushions will be used by event spectators, so it is advised to use durable fibres such as jersey cotton, wool, fleece, polyester or denim cloth, among other suggestions.
  • Your work must be in our possession no later than April 1st 2019, to allow for planning, preparation of the exhibition, the opening, and the publicity.
  • An exposition catalogue will be produced, once we reach 200 cushions, to include photos of the cushions and information about the artisans, their creation, as well as technical details.
  • Though you must accept to donate your work to the permanent collection, we expect to raise sufficient funding to cover shipping. The Société Historique de la Mer Rouge (Red Sea Historical Society) will issue a $400.00 tax-exemption receipt to the artist for each donated cushion. Unfortunately, the tax receipt can only apply to Canadian artist/artisan.

We will be grateful for your participation to make our heritage project a success. We are excited by the response this project has received so far.  We have registered cushion #101 already on our FaceBook page “200 hooked cushions for my 200th”.  For the time being, the members of the Barachois Historic Church Committee thank you in advance for your interest and attention you may give to the success of our cultural project: « 200 hooked cushions for our 200th birthday».
